For immediate release
Approximately 4:00 PM on October 27, 2019, South Conejos Fire Protection District was dispatched to a grass fire near County Road G and County Road 17. At the engine crew’s time of arrival, the fire had begun to spread North and East. At the time of this release there is one structure that was burned as well as three separate out buildings. Large numbers of cattle were displaced. Numerous fences, pasture and haystacks were burned. The fire was approximately 2,000 plus acres in size but the final number of acres is yet to be determined. Sheriff Garth Crowther reported there were minor injuries to one volunteer Fireman and no other reports of injuries.
All Conejos County Fire Departments, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and numerous San Luis Valley Fire Departments were actively fighting the fire. Sheriff Crowther called out for mutual aid from neighboring law enforcement agencies, including Colorado State Patrol who quickly responded. San Luis Valley Emergency Managers also responded. At this time the fire is contained but we are expecting high winds and the fire area will continue to be monitored by fire agencies.
All roads in the fire area are now open. Conejos County Sheriff’s Deputies are currently out assessing further damage along with Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control who are still on scene.
Sheriff’s investigators were on scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. ATF investigators were called to assist with the investigation. The cause is still under investigation at this time.
The Public can also call the Conejos County Sheriff’s Office at 719-376-2196 Option 2 for further inquiries.
